Sportsplay Ready to Kick-off Once Again
Expanded Scoreboard Show Highlights ‘09 Prep Coverage

Rick Berkey, president of Sportsplay, Inc., has announced his high school football lineup for 2009. The lineup includes expanded radio coverage for his high school football scoreboard show plus continued full-season play-by-play coverage of high school football on the Internet.

For the second straight year, Sportsplay has partnered with WOOD-AM (1300) for the weekly Meijer Friday Night First High School Scoreboard Show. This year’s show has been increased from 60 minutes to 90 minutes and will run from 9:00-10:30 PM Friday nights throughout the 9-week, high school football regular season (Thursday on Labor Day weekend).

“The show went over very well last year and the station told me they wanted to expand it in the middle of last season,” said Berkey, who hosts the program. “The extra half-hour not only will result in more reports from football games across the area, it also allowed us to add a new feature spotlighting boys & girls Cross Country.”

The weekly Cross Country feature will include results from the week’s cross-country activity and a preview of the weekend’s action. It will be co-hosted by two area Cross Country coaches: Dennis Scully and Doug Jager.
Returning weekly features in the program are the OK Conference Update Report (hosted by WOOD-AM’s Steve Kelley) which spotlights student-athletes across West Michigan and the Campus Connection Report in which a former high school football player who is now playing collegiately outside the area is interviewed.
“The new Cross Country feature fits in with my long-range plans for the show,” added Berkey. “Though football will always be the focus of the show, I could see the show expanding even more down the road and adding additional features like reports on marching band competition.”

Berkey’s company will also once again produce weekly play-by-play coverage of East Grand Rapids High School and Grand Rapids Catholic Central on the high school sports web site:

“ is the perfect venue for my games,” Berkey stated. “They have a proven track record of weekly coverage of a number of area teams and with other games on MSR each week like Rockford and Caledonia, well, I think we help feed each other.”

“Davenport University’s recent decision to form its own Internet sports network reaffirms my belief that the ‘web is the future of local sports play-by-play. In theory every school in the area, high school or college, could have its games broadcast every week on the Internet.”

Berkey has a solid team of veteran announcers who combine to call the high school game action each week on including: John Matlak, Paul Stabile, Jeff Striegle, Doug Redford, Buck Geno and Dick Truskoski.
